So This Is The New Year
January 4th, 2006 by bungactiongirlSo another year has come and gone but the old cliche time flies while you’re having fun certainly rings true for me. This would be an uncharacteristic emo post for me because today would be exactly two years to the day that Twilight Actiongirl held their first night ever at the now-closed down Bar Amber. What started out as a Sunday get-together for friends in Delawi Bangsar hosted by Daryl aka Ribut and Kelvin aka Chaseylain progressed to birthday parties and culminated with us being the DJs for our old friends Jit and Mary’s wedding party at Delawi itself (!).
We had so much fun on that night that Chief Actiongirl Daryl decided to find a proper venue and do a proper night just for friends. I still remember me and Daryl meeting up with Russell of Bar Amber and how we managed to convince him to let us play for free at the first party, if the turnout was good then only we’ll get paid for the next one. Fair enough. Our old friend Linus put together a b & w flyer for us and we set about distributing photocopied flyers to friends, strangers etc. As it turns out, our first night ever was rammed. We thought it was a fluke and for the next couple of months, we would play in Amber once a month for RM400.00 a night. And when Daryl had to go back to Malacca to attend to something which I don’t remember now on Valentine’s Day, we asked Xu to fill in for him and since then he’s been with us. We thought we wouldn’t even last 3 months and the turnout was erratic at first but Russell stuck by us and even asked us to play at Amber bi-weekly. Slowly but surely, with the regular support of our friends, we survived the first few months and managed to build up a word-of-mouth group of supporters, many of them now we considered our good friends. It was one of them who hooked us up with a try-out gig at the then newly-opened The Loft at Zouk when Bar Amber sadly closed down, almost 8 months after we started playing there.
As usual, everyone including ourselves were skeptical if we could still maintain the cosy vibe that we had at Amber and more importantly, if people would actually bother turning up. But turned up they did. All our regulars from Amber and then some. It’s been humbling and surreal that we’ve been packing it out almost every Friday night at The Loft since then. We might not get a great number of people like the other clubs or nights but I can honestly say that I wouldn’t have it any other way : the people who frequent our nights is the friendliest and most dedicated bunch of party animals in KL, minus the trouble. Most Up For It Crowd for 2005? Hell yeah.
It’s been a rollercoaster year of great highs as well as lows personally but I wouldn’t have it any other way, I’ve learned a lot but at the same time stilI feel that I don’t really know shit.
Thanks to my fellow TAG members - Daryl, Kelvin and Xu - here’s to more drunken nights ahead, Russell who gave us a break when no one else would, Bar Amber (always our spiritual home) and all the ex-staff there, Linus aka Blackstar (TAG chief propagandist), Cheryl for being on our corner and getting us the gig at the Loft in Zouk, ex-Le Chateau and current PHP posse who’s been there since day one, Pandan Indah Rescue Team (Im, Juba, Zack, Mikey), Andrew, our Clubber Of The Year (2nd year running) and Music Magic (for the CD hook-ups), Ricco and everyone at The Lab, the JB Massive (Loong, Kev, Purps, Yi etc), Zouk and staff at the Loft, Muna, April and everyone at Juice and Adrian and KLUe for the free publicity (hah!), everyone who had played with us (Override The System, Raksaksa, PopTart, Pop My Cherry, Feng from Frontal), Tern and June in Bangkok (our first gig out of town!) and most of all our friends, colleagues and punters who have been supporting us all this time, without you guys we couldn’t have lasted so long and gotten so far. Too many of you to list and it’s not easy trying to remember 200 names when you’re drunk. Twilight Actiongirl has always been about friends having a good time together and I feel really lucky and blessed to be able to go on the decks every Friday night (and getting paid to do it no less).
Good things don’t last forever but hell, let’s have as much fun as we can before it does.
Happy New Year everyone, see you at the Loft.
